Shockwave Therapy, Explained Properly
One name, several very different technologies — and evidence that varies with each of them.
Direct answer
What is shockwave therapy used for?
Shockwave therapy is used mainly for persistent tendon and fascia problems that have not resolved with time, rest and rehabilitation — plantar fasciopathy, Achilles tendinopathy, calcific shoulder tendinitis and similar conditions. It is a non-invasive, non-drug option, typically considered after simpler measures have failed and before more invasive ones.

Three technologies, one label
This distinction matters when someone quotes a study at you.
Focused shockwave
Energy converges at a set depth inside tissue. Used where the target is deeper and precision matters.
Radial pressure wave
Energy radiates out from the applicator head and is strongest closer to the surface. Technically a pressure wave rather than a true shockwave.
Unfocused / planar
Energy spreads across a broader zone rather than converging on a point. SoftWave devices fall into this category.
Evidence generated with one device type does not automatically apply to another. When a clinic cites research, it is fair to ask which device the study used and whether it matches the one in the room.
